WE DO NOT STORE ANY DATA OR MESSAGES. PERIOD.
We physically can’t. We have nowhere to store it. We don’t even have a server database. So, even if Justin Bieber asked nicely to see your data, we wouldn’t have anything to show him. That’s why, with Alpha, what happens on your phone stays on your phone until it disappears.
Whenever you want to send a message to another user, your data only moves when you send the message—over secure connections between your phone and theirs. There’s no middleman in your communication. We’re proud to say this. However, there’s only one time we ever see your data—when you open the app. At that moment, we check your location and the colors of your clothes, but those details are routinely deleted. No emails, no phone numbers, no social media accounts.
We’re doing away with bug reports and instead relying on Mixpanel for debugging and event tracking.
Mixpanel is an industry-standard analytics tool. It lets us see that an event happened, like “Justin Bieber sent a message” or “Justin Bieber uninstalled and reinstalled Alpha.” But, as we mentioned earlier, we can’t see any contacts or messages exchanged. Mixpanel just helps us understand how people use Alpha, where they get stuck, and how we can make it better.
Once we start charging users, your billing information will be stored on Apple servers. That’s where you’ll manage your subscription and payment details. Any emails you send to love@themagicalinc.com are stored on Linode. If you ever want us to copy, modify, or delete your information, just send us an email at that address.
When you install Alpha, your phone might say the app can access “your location and send you notifications.” If you care about privacy like we do, that might sound scary. But Apple has to give this warning because so many apps misuse permissions. We can only speak for ourselves: Alpha will only access your location when you open the app and want to use it. Notifications? Only when you get a message, and only if you want them. Most importantly, you’ll always know when Alpha is running.
